A three-day music festival will kick off Aug. 8 in Adams County, bringing 180 bands to Gettysburg from 14 states and Washington.

Gettysburg Rocks will feature multiple genres of music including rock, country, blues, folk, ska and reggae, according to Rob Simon, the brainchild of the upcoming festival.

Simon, host of "Under The Radar" on 105.7 The X in Harrisburg, said he got the idea for Gettysburg Rocks from his daughter, Ashley, who was planning a fundraiser for Penn State Mont Alto's THON group.

The first Gettysburg Rocks was held in February and included 126 live bands across 12 venues in Gettysburg. The event raised more than $14,000 for Penn State's Four Diamonds Fund, which supports children and their families dealing with pediatric cancer at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Simon said.

Like the initial Gettysburg Rocks, proceeds from this summer's event will go toward the Four Diamonds Fund.

Simon's radio show gives local and unsigned bands an opportunity to have their music shared on the radio. He has been the front man for the Gettysburg-based band Robbing Noll for 16 years.

"I do a lot of live shows," Simon said. "I love doing it and helping others in the process. It is the ultimate hobby and Gettysburg Rocks is my exclamation point on everything I do."

Simon has been creating and promoting live shows in central Pennsylvania since the late 1990s, he said. He also created Fall Jam, an outdoor music festival that occurs at the end of September, and the newly formed Pink Houses Festival, coming to Gettysburg in October.
