The big race is coming back to Hanover on Black Friday.
There aren't many transportation options in this race - just the shoe-leather express and Rabbittransit. The rules explicitly states there is no use of cars, motorcycles, helicopters, scooters, taxi's, horse-taxi's, rickshaws or rollerblades, but making reindeer noises is encouraged.
It's time once again for the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Hanover's Second Annual Holidaze Scramble Challenge, an "Amazing Race"-style event.
"It's a goofy, fun way to have fun in downtown Hanover," said chamber spokeswoman Melissa Speal. "People get to learn about Hanover's history while being introduced to, or reintroduced to, downtown, and seeing what all we have to offer."
Racers can register in advance at the Main Street Hanover Facebook page, or on the chamber's website, or they can register the day of the race at the Hanover Theater on Frederick Street.
The event runs from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Friday. Speal suggests participants arrive at the theater by 1:30 p.m.
And then, the race is on.
Participants are given clues and booklets, Speal said, and they race all around downtown Hanover, trying to figure out what Hanover landmarks the clues are referring to.
Racers should bring smartphones or cameras to photograph the answers, and using those smartphones to get online for some help in solving clues is permitted.
The first team to return with photographic answers to all of the clues wins.
The first-place winning team receives $200 in Chamber Dollars, which can be used at about 50 different chamber of commerce-affiliated businesses throughout the area.
Second places receives $100, and third gets $75, both in Chamber Dollars.
The clues and challenges are a little bit tougher this year, written by local historian Blake Stough, Speal said. Sometimes teams will have to return with photographs of a landmark, other times they have to photograph themselves doing some sort of silly activity at a local site.
Teams usually consist of three to five people, and the scramble is open to any age.
About 75 people participated last year, Speal said. They ranged from competitive racers to those on a
leisurely stroll, but they all came out, and had a great time, she said.
Registration is $10 in advance, or $15 at the door.
