Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center president Ken Wesler and his family lived in Monroe, Conn. - on the border of Newtown - for six years. Wesler would commute from the area to his job as CEO of The Stamford Center for the Arts in Stamford, Conn.

His children attended Monroe Public Schools. His neighbors sent their kids to schools in Newtown Public School District.

"It's a small, close-knit community," Wesler said. "You can't live there and not know everyone."

The area was rocked Dec. 14 when a gunman opened fire in Newtown's Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing 20 children, 6 adults and himself.

Wesler's daughter's friend lost a relative in the shooting. His son, who works a security jon in the Monroe area, knows many of the first responders who arrived on scene. His son was in York County last weekend to celebrate his birthday with family.

"(I've) been talking to friends and being as supportive as I can," Wesler said as he contemplated what he could do to help his old community.

After reading an article about locals who helped organize a benefit concert in Newtown, Wesler decided to get involved in efforts to create a fundraiser in York County. He's been in touch with those involved in the Newtown event.

He welcomes those interested in getting involved to email him at or Judi Scarpelli at 717-681-3479 or
