You took the York County homemade ice cream tour last year; it's been updated for this year. We've also added a shaved ice stand as well. The map attached to this page is from the 2012 story. 1. Bill Mack's Ice Cream

FACT: Bill Mack's has been in business for 49 years. "We have been increasingly popular even though we've been around for so long," said owner Todd McDaniel. Its classic flavors include Black Raspberry, Orange Pineapple and Butter Pecan.

2. Sherry's Soft Ice Cream

WHERE: 3096 Carlisle Road, Dover Township

HOURS: 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays

FACT: Owner Sherry Weaver started the business 31 years ago. She makes the soft-serve ice cream, but the shop also serves smoothies and hard ice cream.

3. Beck's Ice Cream Parlor

WHERE: 830 Roosevelt Ave., downtown York

HOURS: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays; closed Sundays

FACT: Try a scoop of Beck's ice cream in an old-fashioned glass dish. Not all of the flavors are old-fashioned, though. Expect a variety of favorites, plus a few new combinations like Couch Potato, with chocolate and peanut butter ripple and bits of pretzels.

4. Jim Mack's Ice Cream

WHERE: 5745 Lincoln Highway, Hellam Township

HOURS: 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day

FACT: Stop by Jim Mack's and meet Ricki, a 15-year-old bear that has lived at the business since he was a cub. You can say hi to other animals as well, or try your hand at Jim Mack's miniature golf course.

5. Sweet Willows Creamery

WHERE: 2812 E. Prospect Road, York Township

HOURS: 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays; 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; closed Mondays

FACT: Owner Brent Lebouitz said he rotates flavors at the creamery, but there are always 30 flavors available, including sorbet, yogurt and no sugar-added varities. "I can come up with all of the flavors," Lebouitz said, "and I don't have to ask corporate to make them. Working here - it's kind of like going on vacation without going on vacation." If you bring a dog, be sure to ask for a pet cone.

6. Perrydell Farms

WHERE: 90 Indian Rock Dam Road, York Township

HOURS: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays

FACT: Perrydell uses milk and cream from its own cows. "When we say it comes from cows to cones, it really does," said Donna Perry, one of the ice cream makers. After a fire at the farm last November, workers and volunteers moved the cows to temporary locations. The cows returned two weeks ago (April 19), so you can say hi to the cow that made your ice cream, Perry said.

7. Mack's Homemade Ice Cream

WHERE: 2668 S. Queen St., York Township

HOURS: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and Saturdays

SEASONAL: Open year-round

SEATING: Indoors and outdoors

FACT: Mack's first started in 1935. It moved in 2009 about a block to its current location in an old Burger King, painted teal and purple. Try one of Mack's classic flavors with a slice of pie.

8. Carman's Old Fashioned Ice Cream

WHERE: 24 N. Main St., Loganville

HOURS: 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, 2 to 6 p.m. Sundays

SEASONAL: Open year-round

FACT: Carman's started in 1953. "It is different than any other ice cream that's on the market," said its third-generation owner Allen McKinney. "We have maintained the original recipe that comes down from the Carman family. The texture is more homemade and it's a clean-tasting ice cream; it doesn't leave that sticky and gooey taste in your mouth."

9. Bonkey's

WHERE: 28 E. Franklin St., New Freedom

HOURS: 3 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; noon to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays

SEASONAL: March through September

SEATING: Outdoors

FACT: Owners Bonnie Cunningham and her husband, Keith Gordon, want Bonkey's to be a "third place" (home being first and work being second). The "third place," which was introduced by writer Ray Oldenburg, encourages sociability and is a spot for people to unwind and relax. At Bonkey's, photos of customers line the walls inside, and employees love their jobs. "The kids that work here come back year after year after year," Cunningham said. "They know our customers; our customers know them."

10. Summers

WHERE: 23 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Stewartstown

HOURS: 3 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; noon to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays

SEASONAL: March through September

SEATING: Outdoors

FACT: Summers is also owned by Bonkey's owners Bonnie Cunningham and Keith Gordon. The bright yellow, beach-themed building is a clue to the variety of flavors inside, including Wild Hogs Bacon, Cookie Monster and German Chocolate.

11. Reeser's Soft Ice Cream

WHERE: 880 Old Rossville Road, Lewisberry

HOURS: 3 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; closed Monday except Labor Day. At 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, the kitchen closes.

Shaved Ice
